REDEVELOPMENT RESOURCES

Mount Airy Downtown, Inc. is dedicated to economic development through historic preservation, and our team has valuable resources for redevelopment including:

  •  Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits: The Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit affords the owner of certified historic structures the ability to capitalize upon a 20% federal tax credit and varied state tax credit when they rehabilitate an eligible building. The National Park Service, through its Technical Preservation Services division, and the Internal Revenue Service administer the program in partnership with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). MAD, Inc. offers a free Historic Tax Credit Mentorship program for property owners of eligible buildings within the Municipal Service District.

  • Free Historic Façade Design Assistance: Through a partnership with North Carolina Main Street and UNCG Department of Interior Architecture, fellows of the NC Main Street program provide free design assistance for storefront rehabs and the adaptive reuse of upper story commercial spaces to downtown living apartments. These projects involve a mix of archival research, fieldwork documentation, and digital design work, using a variety of design software programs.

Are you ready to take on your next historic rehabilitation project? Contact Executive Director, Morgan Johnson for more information about the aforementioned programs and available properties.
